Orang Australia ternyata super kreatif dalam berbahasa.
Begitu sampai di Australia, aku suka tidak mengerti beberapa istilah yang digunakan OZ (baca: ow-zie = orang Australia) sehari-hari. Kadang saat ngobrol dengan teknisi di kampus, membaca koran atau menonton soap opera/film Australia di tivi, aku suka ’lost’ dengan istilah yang mereka katakan.
Bangsa Australia sangat bangga dengan karakteristik mereka sendiri. Mereka sering dituding ’bule slenge’an’, karena berwajah bule tapi berkarakter setengah western dan setengah Asia. Kondisi geografis Australia yang jauh dari negara Barat, mungkin membuat mereka tidak segan mencampur baurkan kebudayaan asal, yang ada dengan budaya dari daerah sekelilingnya. Termasuk soal berbahasa ini.
Mereka berani menggunakan istilah baru, agak cheeky (rude), lucu dan individual di luar batas bahasa yang baku. Ada tiga metode perubahan kata menjadi kata slang, yaitu substitution (pengganti), comparison (perbandingan) dan abbreviation (singkatan). Salah satu proses yang paling mudah ditangkap oleh pendatang baru sepertiku, yaitu abbreviation, misalnya, barbecue = barbie, afternoon = arvo, brickie = tukang bata.
Belum lagi ingat semua istilah, ternyata aku baru tau, kalau kata slang ini tidak pernah statis, maksudnya selalu dinamis dan bisa berubah menurut waktu. So, kalo mau up to date dengan Australian slang, mungkin kamu perlu terus membaca koran dan mendengarkan radio/tivi sebagai media tercepat untuk belajar bahasa khusus seperti ini.

BYO : unlicensed restaurant where you have to Bring Your Own

Chewie : chewing gum
Chokkie : chocolate
Chook : a chicken

Cockie : cockatoo

Compo : Workers' Compensation pay
Cranky : in a bad mood, angry

Dag : a funny person, nerd, goof

Earbashing : nagging, non-stop chatter
Exy : expensive

Galah : fool, silly person. Named after the bird of the same name because
of its antics and the noise it makes.
Give it a burl : try it, have a go
Gobsmacked : surprised, astounded
Good oil : useful information, a good idea, the truth
Good onya : good for you, well done
Greenie : environmentalist
