Mock Strawberry

Hokkaido University Botanical Garden, Sapporo, September 2013
Late Summer

It was a beautiful day in Sapporo.
I went to the Botanical Garden to enjoy some flowers.
I've been told that not many flowers left since summer was nearly over.
However, this visit was on my list, so I still went there, since a visit to a BG is truly important for my botanical sense of feelings.

The lawn is so big and green. Pines and other maple trees showed their bright and healthy green leaves.

I just wanted to take a rest after walking around a patch of dry and green perennials. So, I sat on the lawn and put the conference goodie bag above the grass.

There was a little yellow flower and I wondered about it.

Suddenly, I saw many small red bright fruits under the leaves. I thought they looked like mini strawberries.

So, I collected some of them, gave a bit of flush of drinking water and put them in my mouth. Actually, I've been told many times that it was dangerous to snack on unknown fruits, but the joy of tasting fruits pick directly from trees has defeated my common sense. Those berries were edible, though. I didn't feel anything bad after eating them.

Strangely, those berries did not have any taste and smell. They were tasteless but quite okay for me.

Later, I've found out that it was called 'mock strawberry' or 'Indian strawberry', used to be an ornamental plant and now it is considered as a weed in some countries. I think I've found this mock berry in Philadelphia USA, and Oldenburg Germany.

That was a kind of small memory that I always cherish about finding the mock berries.
